Quick verdict

The GMMK Pro was a landmark product when it launched — it brought gasket-mounted aluminum construction, QMK/VIA support, and a rotary encoder to the mainstream market at a price that undercut most custom keyboard group buys. As a barebones, you provide the switches and keycaps, which adds cost but means your final board is exactly the one you want. It remains one of the best enthusiast-entry purchases available.

Pros

  • Full CNC aluminum chassis — exceptional build quality
  • Gasket mount for cushioned, comfortable typing
  • QMK/VIA support — remap everything
  • Rotary knob is genuinely useful

Cons

  • Barebones — switches and keycaps cost extra
  • More expensive than similar-layout boards that include switches
  • Some reports of PCB flex noise needing additional dampening
  • Wired only

Who it's for

The GMMK Pro is for the enthusiast taking their first serious step into custom-adjacent territory. It's the board you buy when you want to choose your own switches and keycaps, want QMK/VIA for total remapping control, and want the premium build quality of aluminum and gasket mount — without paying group buy prices or waiting months for a custom.

Build & design

The CNC aluminum case is the headline feature. It's weighty at 1.4kg, machined to tight tolerances, and has the resonant, premium feel that plastic boards simply cannot replicate. The gasket mount isolates the typing plate from the case, giving every keypress a slightly cushioned, bouncy quality that reduces fatigue over long sessions. The rotary knob at the top right is a practical addition — volume control, scrolling, and custom QMK actions all map to it naturally.

Typing experience

The GMMK Pro's sound and feel profile is entirely dependent on which switches you install. Gasket mount generally pushes boards toward a thockier, lower-pitched sound, and the GMMK Pro is no exception — even budget Gateron switches sound significantly better here than they would in a tray-mount board. Popular choices include Gateron Yellow for fast linear typing, Boba U4 for silent tactile, and any number of clicky options for that feedback. Budget an extra $30–60 for switches.

Software & customization

QMK and VIA are the gold standard for keyboard customization. Every key is remappable, layers can be configured freely, and the rotary knob behavior is fully programmable. Glorious Core software exists as an alternative for those who prefer a GUI, but experienced users typically go straight to VIA. No driver installation is required for basic use.

The verdict

The GMMK Pro is the best enthusiast-entry barebones keyboard on the market for most users. The aluminum build, gasket mount, QMK/VIA, and rotary knob are a compelling combination. Budget for switches and keycaps on top of the board price, and you'll end up with something that punches well above its total cost. If you want a complete keyboard out of the box, look at the Keychron Q1 instead.
