Quick verdict

The Keychron Q1 is one of the most important mechanical keyboards released in recent years. It brought full CNC aluminum construction, gasket mounting, and QMK/VIA support to the mainstream at under $160 — a specification list that would have cost $300+ in a group buy not long ago. It's now the default recommendation for anyone who wants a premium typing experience without going custom.

Pros

  • Full CNC aluminum chassis — exceptional build for the price
  • Gasket mount delivers cushioned, comfortable typing
  • QMK/VIA support — complete remapping control
  • Hot-swappable 5-pin PCB

Cons

  • Wired only — no wireless option
  • Heavy at 1.6kg — not portable
  • Stock Gateron G Pro switches are adequate, not exceptional
  • No dedicated software — VIA is the interface

Who it's for

The Q1 is for the typist who types a lot — programmers, writers, and anyone who spends hours at a keyboard daily. The gasket mount makes a genuine difference in typing comfort over long sessions, and QMK/VIA means you can map every key exactly how you want. It's also a strong choice for anyone who wants to learn the hobby without paying boutique prices — the build quality teaches you what "good" actually feels like.

Build & design

The Q1 is machined from a single block of aluminum and it shows. The weight and rigidity communicate quality immediately. The gasket mount system places the typing plate on silicone gaskets rather than screwing it directly to the case — the result is a slight bounce with each keypress that reduces finger fatigue and produces a more satisfying typing sound. At 1.6kg it's not a portable board, but on a desk it stays exactly where you put it.

Typing experience

Out of the box with Gateron G Pro Red switches, the Q1 has a smooth linear feel with a deep, thocky sound character that comes from the gasket mount and aluminum case working together. Switching to a tactile like Boba U4 or Holy Pandas elevates it further. The 5-pin hot-swap PCB accepts virtually any aftermarket switch on the market. PBT keycaps are included and are genuinely good — better than most boards at this price include.

Software & customization

QMK and VIA support mean there's no proprietary software to install. Open VIA in a browser, plug in the Q1, and every key is remappable with layers, macros, tap-hold configurations, and more. For users who've never used QMK before, the learning curve is real but the documentation is excellent. Basic use requires no configuration at all.

The verdict

The Keychron Q1 is the answer to "what should my first real mechanical keyboard be?" It delivers aluminum build quality, gasket mount comfort, and full customization support at a price that's genuinely fair. If you're ready to step past gaming-brand keyboards and entry-level boards, this is where to land.
