Keychron V1
Everything the Q1 offers — gasket mount, QMK/VIA, hot-swap — at $90 in a polycarbonate case.
Quick verdict
The Keychron V1 is the Q1's younger sibling and arguably the better buy for most people. The polycarbonate case trades the Q1's aluminum prestige for a softer, slightly more flexible typing feel and $60 in savings. QMK/VIA, gasket mount, and hot-swap are all present. If you don't need aluminum, the V1 is where the value is.

Who it's for
The V1 is for the person who read about the Q1, wants all those features, and doesn't want to spend $150. The polycarbonate case is the main difference — it's lighter, slightly more flexible, and produces a marginally different sound profile. For a first enthusiast board, the V1 is arguably the smarter purchase: same functionality, lower risk if your tastes evolve.
Build & design
The polycarbonate case is transparent-frosted and catches RGB light beautifully. It flexes under typing pressure slightly more than aluminum, which some users prefer and others don't — it's a softer, springier feel. The gasket mount isolates the plate from the case, giving every keypress a cushioned landing. Build quality for the price is excellent; nothing rattles or wobbles.
Typing experience
With Gateron G Pro switches and a gasket mount, the V1 sounds noticeably better than tray-mount boards in the same price range. The polycarbonate adds some resonance — a sheet of foam between the PCB and case eliminates it completely and is a common first mod. Switch-swapping via the 5-pin hot-swap PCB immediately changes the character. Linear switches emphasize the gasket flex; tactile switches add a satisfying bump on top of it.
Software & customization
Full QMK and VIA support. Open VIA in a browser, plug in the V1, and every key is remappable with layers, tap-hold, macros, and more. No proprietary software to install. This is the same software support as the $149 Q1 — one of the V1's best features.
The verdict
The Keychron V1 is the best gasket-mount keyboard under $100. If you want QMK/VIA and the cushioned gasket typing feel without the Q1's price or weight, the V1 is the answer. It's the recommendation I'd make to most people asking "what's a good first enthusiast keyboard?"
